I made up orbats for 8 different forces but unfortunately only 7 of us turned up on the night but there was plenty to keep everyone busy.
Annoyingly I'm still having problems with the blog not allowing me to post pics but fortunately my mate Bill Gilchrist has posted a report and lots of pics on his blog so at least you can see what we've been up to.
The lack of updates is not due to the lack of gaming but more due to work, family and the passing of a couple of friends taking up all my spare time.

The end of the year ended on a high with a fantastic refight of the battle of Aughrim with good friends Barry Hilton, Bob Talbot and Gerry Donohoe. A lot of the time was taken up with taking photos which meant we never got it finished but it has been left in place to fight to a finish on the 12th January so I'll post some pics after that. I hope everyone has had a great Christmas and had lots of wargames goodies that will be making an appearance during the year.
Cheers
Bill Gilchrist and Mr Ray commanded the Russian force while Colin Jack and myself commanded the Japanese. We gave the Russians an extra tank and another rifle squad and reduced the size of the table from an 8x4 to a 6x4 but it meant the Japanese were allowed to deploy up to 5' onto the table.
All the figures and terrain is from Colin's vast collection. Following the defeat of Nazi Germany the Russians transferred tens of thousands of men to face the Japanese in Manchuria which the Japanese had taken off the Chinese in the 1930's. This game was a playtest of one of the games Colin is putting on at our next League of Gentlemen Wargamers weekend in November which is based around WW2, I hope to add more as the weeks go by.

The Russians commanded by Colin have launched a lightening strike with tanks supported by armoured infantry and tank riders against what seemed at first a very week Japanese force commanded by me. The scenario is that the Japanese have fallen back to defensive positions over the river and could be set up anywhere over the river except for two sniper teams that could be positioned on the Russian half of the table.

I placed the majority of my troops and armour in the main defence line and village except for a unit of Manchurian Militia that were left to defend one of the bridges crossing the river line and the 2 sniper teams were placed in the main town on the Russian side of the table.

Japanese armour in ambush positions in the village

At first looking at my force which was strong in infantry I thought the game was going to be a walk over for the Russians as the only anti-tank weapons I had were my two tanks, it was only during the fighting that I discovered how effective my 2 sniper teams could be at taking out tank commanders which added with Colin's terrible dice rolling for orders meant that they spent most of the game going backwards and meanwhile my infantry, especially the grenadier company with their 3 light mortars took out all the Russian infantry facing them.

The initial Russian advance looked so menacing

They quickly took the first bridge

After an initial successful start when they quickly wiped out my Militia unit guarding the bridge things started to go badly for the Russians and soon all their supporting infantry had been wiped out except for a group that was still on the Russian side of the river at the end of the game. The snipers worked a treat at taking out 2 tank commanders just as Colin decided that tanks without commanders had to pass order tests to act. I'm sure he regretted that as they kept failing. That was the main reason his last lot of infantry were stuck on the far bank as they were trying to take out the snipers and he succeeded in taking out one team but that was his only real success of the game.

Last Russian infantry sniper hunting

As a playtest the game worked well and the Japanese victory was unexpected so the next time we try it we will add a few more troops and an extra tank for the Russians, especially as they will have a time limit to get their victory.

All the figures and terrain were from Bill's collection and a very tasty lunch was supplied by his lovely wife Helena. Bill wanted us to try out the Maurice set of rules by Sam Mustapha to see what we thought of them , Bill and Colin Jack commanded the British while Mr Ray and myself commanded the Americans,

Bill had already tried them a few times and wasn't convinced so he was using us as guinea pigs. Even from Bill's introduction I was becoming very sceptical especially when he announced that there is only one general in a force so no historical nonsense like Brigadiers or wing commanders. The biggest problem with this was that all orders are issued by cards, in fact the whole game is run by cards so not sure if the rules have been produced for having games or for selling cards as there seems to be quite a lot of them and for a multi-player games like the one we were having we should have had a pack of cards for each two players.

British right flank

American left flank

Virtually all the action in this battle took place between these two flanks of the battle mainly due to the deficiencies of the command system. To get troops to move they all have to be of the same type and within 4" of each other and depending on how far they were from the commander you might have to use a number of cards to get the order through. If that wasn't bad enough it also meant that no other troops could move, rally off disruption points or even fire your artillery at long range as they all took order points.

The Americans guns only managed to fire twice in the whole game despite having a large number of targets in range as in most moves we were having to rally off disruption points which meant we couldn't do anything else so the two of us ended up commanding the one flank of the battle whilst the other flank virtually did nothing. The British players also had the same problem and their left flank only managed to get moving towards the end of the battle and neither sides cavalry managed to move at all.

British advance to close range

Unfortunately for the American army the dice rolling of Mr Ray and myself was especially bad even by our standards whereas Colin keep rolling more than his fair share of 5's and 6's which meant we struggled to inflict casualties on the British and take our own disruption markers off. Because of our difficulties this meant the Brits could spend time to get their left flank moving forward but they probably wished they hadn't as they ended up losing a couple of Hessian units. This now took their army morale down to 4 which was also the same as the Americans but in the next move the Americans lost another two units which took our morale to 0 which ended the game.

Just about the final moment as the last American infantry unit got blown away

and only left the artillery and cavalry on this flank

Mr Ray and myself just before the final dice rolls

In the end we had an enjoyable game but I think that was more to do with the company than the rules which might work better for standard European battles rather than American ones. The short range volleying part of the game worked OK it's the limitations of the command system that lets the game down in my personal view and stop the use of historical tactics of using cavalry wings and supporting troops. I did wonder if we were using the rules wrongly but we had Dave Patterson with us at the beginning of the game who rates the rules highly so I guess we used them correctly.

The pikemen were fine for using in the later actions except that the front ranks shouldn't have the pavise, not wishing to repaint them all I'm quite happy to ignore their existence and concentrate on the needed additions.
I feel this army is about as old having been started back in 1979/80 when Dixon Miniatures first released this range of figures hence the old school painting and basing.
There have been figures from many companies added to this force over the years from Essex, Foundry, Hinchcliffe, Minifigs and Warrior but majority of figures are from the Dixon range which has now been re-sculpted since I bought these ones. This army has been in it's boxes and not seen action for over 16 years since its English opposition fled to New Zealand and I keep thinking I should sell it off, perhaps one day.
King James loved his heavy artillery and although very useful at the sieges of Etal and Ford castles the big guns took no part in the battle as they were facing the wrong direction and were too heavy to move in time plus the lighter guns the Scots did manage to move into position had difficulty depressing their barrels to fire on the English and were ineffective during the battle.

All the Scots artillery was captured after the battle.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of H.G. Wells book Little Wars which undoubtedly has to be the birth of our crazy hobby but for some reason I have never gotten around to reading it whereas my good mate Aly Morrison not only has read it but thought he would celebrate the anniversary by putting on a game from the book. He put on this lovely display, the battle of Hooks Farm at Partizan II last weekend using his own range of figures, Shiny Toy Soldiers.

Because I was putting on our own Leauge of Augsburg display with Adrian Howe, Barry Hilton, Bob Talbot and Gerry Donohoe and was feeling unwell I completely forgot to take any photos at the show so these ones are courtesy of another mate Colin Jack.

It was with deep regret that I read earlier this week of the passing of Donald Featherstone. This man has had a huge impact on my life by introducing me to the hobby of wargaming way back in the early 1970's when I discovered his book War games in my local library. This now meant that instead of throwing rocks at my plastic Brittains and Airfix figures I could now roll dice and work out on charts what casualties my troops had suffered. Seeing the photographs of his games with lovely metal figures and great looking terrain inspired me to greater things which eventually led to a sand table in my Grandmother's spare room. Through his introduction to this hobby I have made many great friends all over the country but one of my highlights has to be meeting Donald at Salute about 3 or 4 years ago when Aly Morrison and myself put on a demo game of the 1st Schleswig Holstein War using Aly's Shiny Toy Soldier range. He came over to our game and we had a good chat and he complimented us on our game, high praise indeed.

I still have this book as well as many more of Donald's books in my collection and still enjoy looking through them for inspiration. When I started gaming back in the 70's I thought I was at the beginning of the hobby but it was many years later that I discovered that Donald had organised the first British Wargames Convention back in 1961. Although he will no longer be around shows his influence on the hobby will be around for many years to come.

Instead of leaving the blog empty I thought I would show some of my 15mm American War of Independence army which was started many years ago after a trip to Bunker Hill when I was on holiday in the USA. At the time I had been thinking of producing a French Indian Wars army but being inspired by the diorama in the Bunker Hill museum plus there was more use of cavalry and artillery in the AWI I decided to go for this period instead.

Once I started doing research I became more fascinated with the Southern campaign which generally gets ignored compared to the larger battles in the Northern campaign but to me this was an advantage as the battles were generally smaller and easier to produce on the wargames table. I managed to also inspire my mate Jack Glanville in the period and he was keen to produce the British army which was fine by me as I had wanted to concentrate on the Americans and here is some of my collection.
It was when I was doing research for this period that I realised there was little information out there for wargamers which is what first got me involved in writing and I had a number of articles published in Wargames Illustrated, Miniature Wargames and 18th Century Notes & Queries. I eventually had enough information gathered to produce a small booklet which is sold through Caliver Books.

This weeks game along at Colins was set somewhere in Japan in the 16th century and involved two factions of Samurai led by Colin and myself against a joint force of Samurai and Portuguese led by Bill Gilchrist and Mr Ray. All the 28mm figures and terrain were supplied by Colin and the rules used were Gleaming Katanas which are supposed to be a variant of Blackpowder. Personally I'm not into Samurai or Blackpowder but I have to admit the game looked good and the rules worked OK, except for the result and I found it a bit strange that Samurai weren't much better than Ashigaru unless they were mounted.

The above photo shows the initial clash of forces with my red hatted clan advancing towards Bill's blue clan, on the top right Colin's mounted samurai dash to disaster and the infantry in the field never moved any further for the rest of the game despite the fact that he was usually only facing 2-3 Portuguese units at any time.

This photo is taken from Colins flank and shows the defenders in the field, his cavalry have now gone and one unit of Ashigaru have rashly advanced unsupported. On the other flank my troops have now gotten into combat and are forcing Bill's troops back all along the line and at this point everything was looking so good.

Ray's Portuguese advancing, the artillery never got a chance to fire in anger, not that they really needed it. Ray had some great dice rolling for causing casualties but some dreadful dice for issuing commands.

This was the stand off with Ray's troops unable to move and Colins refusing to move. Meanwhile on my flank just as I was starting to break Bills infantry all it did was give space for his cavalry to run amok and within two moves he had completely changed the look of the battle.

This is the end of the battle, with my cavalry now destroyed by Bill's white hooded unit my infantry were now isolated with shaken enemy infantry in front of them, formed infantry and cavalry on their flank and the white hoods about to sweep around the rear. Colin's troops were still stuck in their field but as they were now all shaken or disordered no help was coming from that direction.General Buggerationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04322457329762218851noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3524639008852456643.post-27076586666300399362013-08-12T21:03:00.001+01:002013-08-12T21:04:05.371+01:00King William's WarI've posted another Donnybrook scenario set in North America in the 1680's during the period known as the King William's War on the League of Augsburg Blog.
This was another Donnybrook scenario that I put on for Colin and Ray since they enjoyed the previous game so much. All the figures and animals supplied by me and terrain by Colin and myself.
I had previously fought this scenario before with Bob Talbot but that had been a two player game but this time I adapted it as a three player scenario.

The basic scene is that the Moorish and English forces are advancing on a nearby village to round up as many animals as they can to feed their troops and the third player are the villagers who are keen to hang onto their animals. Goats are worth 1pt each, sheep are worth 5pts each and cattle are worth 10pts each, the camels and market stall are for scenic purposes only although they could also have been added as further victory points. I set up the three factions then allowed Colin and Ray to pick which ones they wanted and would have what was left. Colin decided to go for the Moors this time since he commanded the English in the last game and Ray decided to take the local villagers which left the English for me.
I haven't posted all the scenario details here as they will either appear in the Donnybrook rules book or I will add them into the League of Augsburg Blog http://leagueofaugsburg.blogspot.co.uk/

The game started very well for the villagers as all their troops came out in the first four moves whereas half the English troops were still waiting to arrive but this ended up actually being an advantage as it meant that the two Moorish factions were left to fight themselves whilst trying to round up the animals.

Eventually all the English troops got on, you can see them sneaking up in the left of the above photo.
The only unit of theirs that actually got into combat were the pikemen who ended up destroying the Moorish heavy cavalry and relieving them of the animals they were herding off whilst the rest of the infantry quietly rounded up what was in the immediate area and the four goats they got in the last move game them the victory by collecting 84pts of animals against the Moors 80 and the poor old villagers were left with nothing.

Again both Colin and Ray enjoyed the games so much that they are already planning their own Donnybrook factions.General Buggerationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04322457329762218851noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3524639008852456643.post-6153594457101504342013-08-07T20:47:00.001+01:002013-08-07T20:47:49.170+01:00Saving the Slaves

The basic scenario is that a group of English civilians and servants have been taken prisoner by the Moors during one of their many raids and are about to be sold at one of the slave markets in a nearby village as seen above. A detachment of troops has been sent out from Tangiers to go and rescue them. Colin commanded the English troops and Ray commanded the Moors although the only troops he has available at the beginning of the game are the slave traders bodyguard, reinforcements will come from the local villagers and from cavalry from off table.

The game started well for Colin as he managed to get all his troops on the table whilst the Moors only had the bodyguard unit and two small units of villagers that had rallied to their cause.

Eventually Ray's cavalry arrived and he tried outflanking the English troops but rashly ended up charging the English pikes which surprising turned out ok for him as he managed to push the pikes almost off the table. Instead of continuing to finish them off he decided to go and attack the musketeers where it all went horribly wrong.

The only success the Moors managed to achieve was to kill the English leader but by that point they had lost 50% casualties then failed their morale test. This would normally be the end of the game but they were both enjoying it so much they decided to carry on but it didn't get much better for the Moors and with the defeat of the bodyguard there was nobody left to stop the English from rescuing the prisoners.
Above is a general view of the display game that myself, Barry Hilton, Bob Talbot and Gerry Donohoe put on at Claymore the annual show of the South East Scotland Wargames Club in Edinburgh on Saturday 3rd August. This was the central section of the battle of Aughrim fought in 1691 between the Williamite army led by General Ginkel and the Jacobit army led by General St. Ruth while both kings William III and James II/VII had left Ireland by this point in the war.
to do any work changing the gaming table due to his gammy leg we decided to
just use the same layout as the Plucky Belgian game only this time it would be
the Germans commanded by Ray doing the defending and the Allies in the form of
Free French commanded by me doing the attacking. Gammy legged Colin did the
umpiring again.
Elements of German 15th army are defending the
Scheldt and stopping shipping getting up the river to unload vital supplies at
Antwerp. The Allies have planned an amphibious operation to take the Walcheren
islands and to aid the landings there elements of the Free French 1st
Armoured Division have been ordered to take the coastal artillery position at
Cadzand. As usual the figures are 28mm, the terrain and Germans are all from
Colin’s collection and the majority of the French are from my collection and we
used Bolt Action rules for the game.
once the supporting artillery actually landed where it was intended but
unfortunately didn’t cause many casualties and only a few pins but it did give
the remaining French another chance to advance but every shot from my Shermans
failed to hit a single German tank which wasn’t surprising since I was needing
double 6’s to hit the dug in armour, my luck from the previous two games had
obviously run out. The German ambush points 3, 4, 5 and 6 were eventually
overrun but this was the high tide of the French attack and with only 1 Sherman,
an M10 and very few infantry left they were forced to fall back.
fought between myself as the Plucky Belgians and Mr Ray as the nasty Nazis,
poor Colin is in crutches from a gardening accident so sat at the end of the

Germans started the battle by racing up the road and promptly spotted the A/T
rifle crew at ambush position 1 and reversed back down the road before a shot
could be fired at it then they brought on their scout car and sent it into the
fields on their right and started spotting for the enemy. On move 2 the German
A/C decided to swing round to the left behind the church and promptly ran into
the T15’s in ambush at position 3. It fell back from fire from the first tank
but was still in range from the second one which promptly pinned it.
panic all along the German line. By this time the other 38t had also been
knocked out alongside the lead tank and things were starting to look difficult
for the Germans until a good run of the movement dice allowed them to race some
of their lorry borne infantry up to the area of their knocked out tanks then
called in the Luftwaffe to take out the ambushing Belgian A/T guns. In
virtually every game we have played using Bolt Action air and artillery support
has been a disaster and this wasn’t going to be different as Ray rolled a 1
which then allowed me to redirect the air assault right on top of his debussed
infantry causing multiple pins and casualties and the rest being destroyed by
the light howitzer.
Bill and Ray took the German role while Colin and myself were the Poles. We used Bolt Action rules for the game and Colin supplied all the terrain, 28mm figures and vehicles.

German briefing
It is September 1939 and the war has been going well for the Germans and Adolf Hitler is flying to Warsaw to take part in victory celebrations, unfortunately his plane has developed engine trouble and has had to make an unscheduled landing in an airfield outside of the Polish capital so the rest of the journey will have to be made by road.

Apart from the Fuhrer there are also two important staff officers
who will also have to be transported safely

To escort the VIP's you have an SS squad of 6 riflemen and the driver of the staff car also has an smg. The commander of the airfield has also sent an escort of a squad of Luftwaffe troops, an officer and 6 men armed with rifles or smg's. For transport you have the staff car already mentioned as well as a Kubel Wagon and truck for the Luftwaffe infantry. The crew of the downed plane can also act as a reserve if needed and are armed with pistols and an Lmg.

Polish briefing
It is September 1939 and the war has been going well for the Germans and the Polish army is all but destroyed and you and a group of 6 soldiers have been separated from your unit during the retreat and have been sheltered by some local villagers. Word has reached you that a German plane has been forced to land at the nearby airfield and that a convoy is being set up so perhaps someone important is on board and this could be your last chance to do something for your country before the war ends. The local villagers are also keen to help so the village elder and 6 men have volunteered, it's just a pity that they have no military training so not much can be expected of them.

Victory conditions
The Germans get 1vp for every Polish village taken out and 1vps for every Polish regular and 5vps for every staff officer you get off table.
The Poles get 1vp for every Luftwaffe person taken out, 2vps for every SS man and 5vps for every staff officer. If they kill Hitler they will win the game whatever the other outcome is.

The game
The Poles started in ambush anywhere they wanted as long as they were more than 12" away from the airfield and we weren't sure if the Germans would just stick to the road for the extra speed bonus or go across country. As commander of the Polish troops I took the regulars and set up ambush 1 in the large ditch alongside the road which covered the road as well as the gap opposite and the open ground behind should the Germans try to sneak off that way. Knowing of the poor quality of the villagers I set them up as a last resort in the village at ambush 2. Knowing Bill I guessed he would hide Hitler away in another vehicle instead of the staff car and probably disguise him as an ordinary soldier even though I doubt Hitler would ever have agreed to that in real life.

The game started with the German truck moving out of the airfield and down the road followed by the two Polish ambushers passing on their move, then next came the Kubel wagon and the end of turn followed so the staff car was still in the airfield. Move two saw the truck move gingerly down the road but still no ambush followed and the staff car joined at the back of the queue and the end of turn.

At the start of turn three Ray was starting to get a bit jittery especially when he kept getting asked to test and failing to see if he could spot any Poles, so he promptly debussed his men and slowly crept down the road. Bill commanding the other two vehicles made sure he kept well back allowing Ray to trigger any ambushers but still no fire came. By move four the German truck was about to enter the village so Colin opened up with his men but failed to hit anything and it was at this point that the Kubel wagon turned off road to the left so my ambushers let them have it.

Not only did my fire bring the vehicle to a halt with a shot to bits engine I also hit one of the passengers who had more than one wound, was this Hitler?

The SS also got out of the following staff car and also ran into a hail of lead losing two of their number and the driver pinned in the car unable to use his smg. It was around this time that Bill started cursing my dice rolling as it is normally rubbish but this night I wasn't rolling anything less than a 5 or 6 for shooting. I just know it will all go horribly wrong in the next game.
In the next few moves my riflemen joined Colin in shooting up the Luftwaffe while my BAR gunner kept hitting the Kubel wagon and my officer dealt with the SS himself.

The remaining troops from the wrecked car fled from the scene so it was obvious that it wasn't Hitler in there but I was determined to take him out as the others were too far away and behind cover to get a shot. Perhaps one of them was Mr H? all would be revealed at the end of the game.

Back in the village the Luftwaffe were coming of the worst being caught in a crossfire so the officer and driver in the truck decided to leg it leaving his men to their fate, that is until Colin's men shot the driver leader ran out and lobbed a Molotov cocktail at the truck and destroyed it. For the next couple of moves Colin's and the Luftwaffe leader had a ding dong fist fight going on which neither seemed to be able to win and as Bill's remaining figures crept off the table we called an end to the game and to discover the fate of Hitler.

The German shooting was horrendous in this game and they only took out 1 Polish regular and 3 villagers and got one staff officer off the table scoring 10 points. The Poles on the other hand because of my great dice rolling took out 5 SS men 5 Luftwaffe men and a staff officer scoring 20 points.

What of Hitler I hear you ask! Bill being devious as ever decided not to even risk the Fuhrer's life and left him back at the airfield, he argued unconvincingly that all his men had just been sent off to get more reinforcements to escort their leader safely to Warsaw which wasn't the idea of the scenario so the Poles were awarded an overwhelming victory.General Buggerationhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04322457329762218851noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3524639008852456643.post-63900738530371728992013-06-25T19:59:00.000+01:002013-06-26T21:05:53.925+01:00Waterloo 2013

to take part in a Waterloo refight on the weekend of the 198th anniversary of the battle but myself, Angus Konstam, Bill Gilchrist and Colin Jack had already agreed to attend the latest weekend extravaganza from the League of Gentlemen Wargamers and as three of us were the organisers of the event we could hardly pull out. Iain re-arranged the game for the following weekend but unfortunately I was working and couldn't get up until late on the Sunday afternoon but got there just as my favourite 100 days troops, the Prussians made their arrival.

Although I took loads of photos there is no point in me posting loads here as Bill Gilchrist has posted 129 on his Flickr folder

Apart from supplying the fantastic terrain, all the Allied troops and a portion of the French Iain also brought along a selection of artifacts from the battle.

The game was fought with 28mm figures in a 1:40 figure scale and the guys used Black Powder rules to fight all the action.

The photo above shows the layout for the large 30'x8' Sunday game devised by Peter Nicolson.

The basic scenario was that the Americans were to demolish the firebase at the base of the photo and set up in a new location which had been started on high ground at the top end of the table.

They also had a military hospital set up in the middle left hand side which they had to defend as well as recover some Special Forces troops that had been captured by the VC and discover and destroy a VC arms dump. The VC victory conditions were basically to stop the Americans obtaining their objectives and to cause as many casualties as possible.

Needless to say the good guys, VC won the game by stopping the Americans setting up the new firebase plus we captured the old one, held onto four of the six prisoners we had and retained our arms dump which is just as well as we would need resupplied after destroying so many American boats and armour as well as wiping out loads of their troops.

There's no point in me posting any of my pics as Bill Gilchrist and Angus Konstam have already published loads plus reports on their blogs and Bill also has loads of pics on his Flickr account, the link to which can be found on his blog.

This was the 6th scenario I had devised for our LOGW weekend and was really just produced as an extra because we were unsure if one of our members was actually going to able to make it or not.

As things turned out he couldn't get to the weekend so this game wasn't fought on the Saturday but Peter Nicolson who was arranging the big Sunday game liked the scenario so much that he included it in his huge game. I have really only added it here for completeness.

This scenario was one of six that I arranged for our League of Gentlemen Wargamers weekends and what a scenario it turned out to be with 5 games played and 4 different results varying from complete failure to overwhelming success. All the details such as map, scenario, special rules and a few photos will be appearing in Charles Grants latest Wargames Annual which will be out later in the year.
